Description: An account of the Battle of Ortona. Known as "Little Stalingrad", the small village of Ortona on the Adriatic coast of Italy became the scene of a fierce battle between the advancing First Canadian Division and the elite German 3rd Parachute Regiment of the First Parachute Division. The bitter street fighting, snipers and booby traps claimed so many lives on both sides that the battle was known as "Little Stalingrad" or, the "Stalingrad of Italy." Hitler ordered the town be held at all costs. Ortona became a symbol, as important as Rome. The battle was a matter of national prestige at home & abroad. 1,375 Canadians were killed in and around Ortona in December 1943, 2,339 were casualties. Mcplkelly ::: Favorites 2007-11-24 20:12:16 Unfortunely the US went for Rome instead of cutting off the Germans and opening up the way for a massive breakthrough in Italy. Bad mistake, stupid Clark. __________________________________________________

shilpaddideo ::: Favorites 2007-08-19 13:02:10 it is all right my friend. My parents came in Buenos Aires in 1957, after all destruction. Now Ortona is re-built and is nice. My gandfather was died in the first war. Italy was wrong too killing afrikans. I'm living in Argentina, and i have 41 years old. I saw another irrational war at Malvinas. The men never learns! __________________________________________________
Shinobi022 ::: Favorites 2007-08-19 01:59:33 Sorry about that. Next time enjoy your nazi overlords. __________________________________________________ |
